Out For Lunch

Last Sunday we took a trip to a small village to the east of where we live to meet up with some friends for lunch, they recommended a great Taverna on the beach where all the local Greek people go which is always a sign that the food is good!
The place was filling up quickly as we arrived but the service was very good and we had our table and the waiter had taken our order within a few minutes. There were six of us and we had 2 Greek salads, 2 plates of fava beans with onions and bread as starters, and we had some of the local wine.
Next came our main course which was lamb cooked very slow in the oven and potatoes which are cooked again in the oven with olive oil and lemon, the meat was so tender it just fell off the bone.

We were so full up we did not think we could eat anything else but after our plates were cleared away they brought to the table a variety of fruit, cheese pies with honey, caramelized orange fruits plus of course the Cretan spirit Raki, these are always given free at the end of any meal.

We had such a wonderful time, good company and great food, we enjoy spending time with Greek people who certainly know how to enjoy their food.

Preparing For The Tourists

After the very quiet winter here in the village where we live the place is slowly coming alive in preparation for the start of the tourist season. The hotels, stores, restaurants etc are all getting a spruce up so they are ready for the arrival of the first tourists.
Easter here in Greece is the biggest holiday and the most celebrated so a few of the hotels are going to be open for that, it is early this year, Easter Sunday being 4th April, there will be the smell of lamb roasting on the spits everywhere as the Greeks celebrate the end of their fasting and they can eat meat again.
Although Greece is going through an economic crisis at the moment and the cost of living has risen the government (and the local people) are hopeful that people will still visit and enjoy their vacations. The country is so beautiful and the people are some of the friendliest in the world so if you have not booked your vacation yet for this year then please consider coming over to Greece.
We live on the island of Crete which is the largest of the islands and there is so much to see and do, you will not be disappointed.
This is the harbour in Rethymnon where you can sit at one of the many Tavernas and enjoy some delicious Greek food.

The Pub Quiz

We went to a pub quiz last night at a local bar here in the village, we tend to go every Tuesday and keep our brains active!
JJ's is a bar owned by Sylvia and Gordon and English couple who have lived here for about 7 years, in the summer the main clients are tourists but this year they have opened in the winter for the expats that live here all year round.
They only open 3 nights a week but it is a place to meet up and have a chat with fellow expats if you feel the need for some English conversation, which we all need now and again. We love to mix with the local people, to be honest that is why we came to live here to be with the Greek people but there are times when we need to have a good old chat in our own language.
This morning even though I feel tired after celebrating our team winning the quiz for the first time I need to get on with some work, I am trying to build up my online business so I must get organised with the jobs for today. I am doing a joint venture with a few other ladies, we have a website to help you if you are thinking of moving abroad, take a look and see what you think:
http://www.livinginthesun.info/
so I need to write this weeks blog for that after finishing this one!
The village is slowly starting to come alive after the quiet time of the winter, there are lots of preparations for the Easter going on, if you have ever visited Greece you will know that Easter is the most important and biggest Holiday here and it is only a few weeks away so we will see the first tourists arriving for the celebrations.
I will be telling you more about it soon and show you some photos.
